Ilia Topuria, hailed as one of Europe's most prominent UFC athletes, continues his victorious journey as his fame skyrockets. Recently, the newly crowned UFC featherweight champion engaged in a meeting with Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, on Tuesday, during which he received the news that he will be granted Spanish citizenship.

Born in Germany to Georgian parents, Topuria spent his formative years in Georgia before relocating to Spain during his teenage years. His pursuit of Spanish citizenship has been ongoing for several years. Throughout his UFC career, the 27-year-old has proudly showcased both the Georgian and Spanish flags. This display of dual identity was particularly poignant when he secured victory at UFC 298 earlier this month, defeating Alexander Volkanovski with a stunning knockout, maintaining his undefeated record at 15-0 in mixed martial arts.

Topuria's acclaim extended beyond the octagon as he received a warm welcome in Spain over the weekend. Invited to perform a ceremonial kick before a Real Madrid game, he further solidified his status as an international sports figure.

Despite the surge in Topuria's global popularity, the opponent for his first title defense remains uncertain. The current frontrunner for the next title shot, as indicated by opening odds at BetOnline, is Brian Ortega. Ortega secured his position after submitting Yair Rodriguez in Mexico City this past Saturday.
